Sri Lanka South Coast Tours from Australia & New Zealand
From December to March, Sri Lanka's south and west coasts are generally in their drier season, making this a good time to include a beach stay around Galle, Bentota or the southern coastline. Conditions vary from place to place, but these months are the main season for that side of the island.
All three of our Sri Lanka itineraries follow a similar seasonal route. They start near the airport, head north into the Cultural Triangle, climb into tea country, continue south-east for wildlife experiences and finish with time on the coast before returning to Colombo.
The difference is in the pace, how much time is given to the ancient cities and wildlife, and the choice of beach destination. Here's how the three itineraries compare, who each suits, and how we adapt them for the April 2027 school holidays.
The three itineraries at a glance
- Highlights of Sri Lanka in 10 Days — Wilpattu and Yala wildlife experiences. Best for first-time visitors wanting wildlife and the highlights.
- Glimpse of Paradise, Sri Lanka (11 days) — Anuradhapura and Polonnaruwa, plus the rest of the Cultural Triangle. Best for travellers particularly interested in history and culture.
- Explore Sri Lanka: Nature, Culture and Serenity (11 days) — a broader mix of culture and wildlife, with two nights in Bentota. Best for couples and travellers wanting a more relaxed beach finish.
Highlights of Sri Lanka in 10 Days
Highlights of Sri Lanka in 10 Days is our most wildlife-focused option. After a first night in Negombo, it heads north-west to Wilpattu, Sri Lanka's largest national park, for two nights — often a less-visited alternative to the southern parks. From there it crosses to Dambulla and Sigiriya, continues through Matale and Kandy to Nuwara Eliya in tea country, then drops down to Yala for a second safari before two nights in Galle and a last night in Colombo.
It suits first-time visitors who want a strong wildlife thread and are happy with a few longer driving days.
Glimpse of Paradise, Sri Lanka (11 days)
Glimpse of Paradise spends more time on Sri Lanka's history. It includes Anuradhapura, the island's ancient capital, as well as Polonnaruwa, Dambulla and Sigiriya, with an afternoon in Minneriya, a park known for its elephants. From Kandy it continues to Nuwara Eliya, visits Ella and the Nine Arch Bridge on the way to Yala, and finishes with two nights in Galle before a final night in Colombo.
This is the itinerary for travellers who want the Cultural Triangle in depth before the beach.
Explore Sri Lanka: Nature, Culture and Serenity (11 days)
Explore Sri Lanka follows a similar route through the ancient cities, Kandy, the hills and Yala, and includes a two-night stay in Bentota on the west coast after visiting Galle. Bentota has a long beach and a slower pace, giving time to unwind before the final night in Colombo and the flight home.
It suits couples and travellers who want the last part of the trip to be genuinely relaxed.
A note on the hill-country train
The Kandy–Ella railway journey is one of Asia's great scenic train experiences. However, sections of the line were damaged during Cyclone Ditwah in late 2025, and the full route is not yet operating. The Nanu Oya–Ella–Badulla section has reopened, but rail services from Kandy remain disrupted while repairs continue.
Where the full route isn't operating, we arrange the journey by road and incorporate the scenic train section wherever services are available. Railway arrangements can change, so we confirm the practical details when finalising each itinerary.
Sri Lanka for the April 2027 school holidays
The south and west coasts can remain attractive into April, which brings Sri Lanka within reach of the autumn school holidays — NSW government schools from 12 to 23 April 2027 and New Zealand from 10 to 26 April, with other Australian states and territories on different dates. For families, we usually make a few changes:
- fewer one-night stops, so children are not packing and unpacking every morning
- a single base in the Cultural Triangle, with day trips to Sigiriya, Dambulla and the elephant parks
- a shorter game drive, or Udawalawe for elephants instead of a full day in Yala
- more time on the coast at the end, where the trip can slow right down
April is a transitional weather period, with increasing humidity and the possibility of afternoon thunderstorms. Sinhala and Tamil New Year also falls in mid-April, when domestic travel increases and some businesses close. We plan around both.
Frequently asked questions
Which Sri Lanka coast is in season in January?
The south and west coasts are generally in their drier season from December to March. The east coast, around Trincomalee and Arugam Bay, is usually best from about May to September.
Can you do Sri Lanka in ten days with children?
Yes, with a gentler pace. We reduce the number of hotel changes, keep driving days shorter and allow more time at the beach.
When is whale-watching season at Mirissa?
Generally from about November to April. Boats leave early, sightings vary and nothing is guaranteed, but it is a highlight for many travellers. We can add it to any of the three itineraries.
Do I need a visa for Sri Lanka?
Australian and New Zealand passport holders are currently eligible for a free 30-day tourist ETA (Electronic Travel Authorisation), which must be obtained before arrival. Entry requirements can change, so check the official Sri Lankan immigration website before departure.
Southern Vietnam is on the same calendar
If Sri Lanka isn't the right fit, southern Vietnam also enters its drier season from December, with the Mekong Delta and Phu Quoc both popular through the first months of the year.
Lunar New Year (Tet) falls on 6 February 2027, with the main public-sector holiday period running from 4 to 10 February. It is one of Vietnam's busiest domestic travel periods, with increased demand for transport and accommodation and some businesses closing for the celebrations. We recommend planning around these dates when arranging travel.
